Engaging Imagination

“Imagination is not something apart and hermetic, not a way of leaving reality behind; it is a way of engaging reality.”
– Irving Howe
What can you imagine for the day that lies ahead? For the weekend that is almost here? For the next year? What sorts of changes can you imagine bringing to your world that would make it a friendlier place to live? Imagination is not a departure from reality. Imagination is a doorway — a portal — that opens into a new reality. It is a portal from the world we already know to the limitless potential that lies all around us and has not yet manifested itself in a tangible way.
Imagining is an intentional act. It should not be confused with daydreaming, which often replays events that already have happened and dwells on the perceived successes or failures of the past. Imagining is present-tense, and it gazes upon the reality of today and the potential that might transform that reality into a more fulfilled tomorrow.
We must not daydream. We must not remain stuck in what was real yesterday and assume that things must always stay the same as they have been in the past. Leave your daydreams behind and open your heart to imagination. Look with love to all the unrealized potential that hums all around you. Step over the threshold into a place without limits and bring back the things you would like to see right here and right now. Imagine how incredible your world could be — and then make it happen. Just imagine.
