“In order to compose, all you need to do is remember a tune that nobody else has thought of.”
– Robert A. Schumann
When I read Schumann’s words, I swear I could hear music playing in my own mind — music that has existed since the dawn of time, but perhaps still waits to be transcribed. Think about it. The scale is made up of only eight notes — fifteen if you add the half-steps — and all the music that ever has been written is simply a matter of rearranging these notes in different patterns at different rates of speed and played by different instruments. One would think that by now all the songs would have been written, but composers continue to find new combinations that please the ear and lift the spirit.
What does this say about the way we live our lives? If all that potential exists within the eight notes of the musical scale, plus the seven half-steps, can we even begin to fathom the amount of created potential that already exists in each of us and waits for us to call it into existence?
We sometimes think that it is difficult to be human and to make it through our days on earth. How might that change if we embraced the fact that we carry all the potential of Creation right inside of each of us. What if we stopped feeling responsible for creating something new and simply accepted the gift of liberating what already exists. What wonderful sorts of music might play through each effort we make to bring love and light to the world. It’s already there. All we need to do is let it shine.
Eight notes in a scale — fifteen if you count the half-steps — and yet the music continues to flow. All we need to do is remember a tune that nobody has thought of.
