April Fool

April Fool’s Day has arrived, and I must say that kudos go to Mother Nature and the National Weather Service who seem to be operating in cahoots to trick us this year. First we had a couple of balmy 70-degree days that had us all out looking for newly sprouted flowers. Then the cold weather returned and sent us scurrying indoors to hide from the bite of the wind. It’s a cruel trick when Mother Nature taunts us with days that let us bare our arms to the weather and then returns us to winter. Somehow 35 degrees seems colder after an early Spring tease than it does at the end of a long stretch of winter.
My Florida relatives tell me that they’ve had more than ten inches of rain this week culminating in tornadoes that uprooted trees and took out their power for a time yesterday. We went to bed last night with a Winter Storm Warning for 5-10 inches of snow; but when we awoke today there was only water on the streets. Fickle doesn’t even come close to describing the Spring of 2011. The groundhog promised an early Spring, but so far we haven’t seen one. Maybe he is part of the conspiracy as well.
All I have to say is this: First, beware of small children who add food coloring to the milk and turn your cereal blue. Beware of sneaky mothers who serve Green Eggs and Ham as though they were daily fare. Most of all, beware of the urge to ignore someone’s caution about the weather, because anything could happen this April Fool’s Day. And my words for Mother Nature and the Weather Service are these: Have a wonderful time with us today, because this is your last chance to toy with us. After all, by tomorrow we will be able to tell you that “April Fool’s Day is past, and you’re the biggest fool at last.” Enough.
